4 Important Questions to Ask at Your Next Dental Appointment

Your time with the dentist is your opportunity to have their undivided attention regarding all things teeth and gums. Whether you need help with dental problem, have a burning question you’ve always wanted to ask, or you just need a little hygiene advice, here are four important questions you can ask at your next exam to make the most of your  semi-annual dental appointment and your oral health!

Do I Have Bad Breath?

You know that trick people do where they breathe into their hand and try to fan it back towards their nose to tell if their breath smells bad? Well, it doesn’t really work. Not only that but asking someone else to smell your breath may not be something you’re comfortable doing, so you could have bad breath right now and not even know it. Thankfully, your dentist can help. Not only can they tell you if your breath is bad, but they can also provide you with a cause and even a solution to fix it.

Do I Need Mouthwash?

People use mouthwash for many reasons, but it’s not considered an absolute must in your daily routine like brushing your teeth and flossing are. So, how do you know if you need it? Ask your dentist! He or she can tell you whether you should be rinsing, when in your routine to do it, and what type of product to use.

Should I Tell My Doctor Anything?

Sometimes when you see the dentist, he or she might find something in your mouth that’s cause for concern. For example, they may find a suspicious spot that could be oral cancer, or if you are pregnant, they could spot gestational gingivitis, both of which should be mentioned to your doctor. Thus, be sure to ask if any diagnoses need to be discussed with a primary care physician or medical specialist after you leave.

What Kind of Toothbrush and Toothpaste Should I be Using?

Did you know that all toothbrushes were not created equally? They actually come in different bristle strengths, and which type you use depends on your individual situation. For example, if you have veneers, you’ll likely want to use a soft-bristled brush and a non-abrasive toothpaste to prevent scratching them. Don’t just buy any old tools; ask your dentist if you are using the correct products to keep your teeth healthy and strong!

Remember, your dental appointment is your opportunity to discuss all things oral health with your dentist. If you have any questions or concerns, it’s the perfect opportunity to bring them up. You may just learn something!
