Try These Smile-Friendly Stocking Stuffers to Keep Your Holiday Cavity-Free

It’s the holiday season again, and that means good cheer, merriment, and gift-giving. While it’s always fun to see your child’s face light up when they open a present, sometimes all the candy that winds up in kids’ stockings can make dentists nervous. In lieu of chocolate, candy canes, and other holiday sweets, here is a short list of stocking stuffers that will help keep your child’s smile healthy for years to come.

A Toothbrush in the Sock Can Create a Smile That Rocks

Thankfully, the stockings traditionally hung over the fireplace have more than enough room to fit a toothbrush. Toothbrushes come in all sorts of fun colors and can be themed after your child’s favorite cartoon character. You might even consider upgrading to an electric or musical toothbrush that can help kids clean their teeth thoroughly while having fun in the process.

Flavored Dental Supplies Will Keep Spirits High

Many children aren’t thrilled at the bland or mint flavorings that floss, toothpaste, and mouthwash usually come with. Luckily, some brands of dental supplies come in kid-friendly flavors like fruit or bubblegum. Just keep in mind that:

  • These gifts should have the American Dental Association’s seal of approval.
  • You should select products that contain fluoride.
  • Consult with your dentist about what type of toothpaste is appropriate for a child under two.
  • Mouthwash should not be used by children under the age of six.

Healthy Snacks Can Hold the Plaque Back

While your child will probably find some traditional sugary candy in their stocking, it’s not a terrible idea to include some teeth-healthy snacks in there as well. Nuts are low in sugar and full of protein, and pistachios are a time-honored holiday favorite. Though raisins can stick to the teeth, they are also naturally high in nutrients as well as fluoride. Just make sure your child brushes their teeth after enjoying them. Believe it or not, dentists recommend chewing sugar-free gum after meals because it helps to clean away lingering food particles, making it a great smile-friendly stocking stuffer.

The holiday season is a time to celebrate and appreciate your loved ones, but tooth decay isn’t going on vacation just because school is out and you have a few days off work. By remembering to look after everyone’s dental hygiene, you can help make sure everyone’s smile is just as bright next year.
